The 63rd festival de Cannes commenced on Wednesday with Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood amidst much fanfare.
The screening of Robin Hood was preceded by a ceremony presided over by actress Kristin Scott-Thomas that officially launched the event. Director of the film Ridley Scott couldn’t attend the festival as he is recovering from a knee surgery.
The Jury presided by Tim Burton comprises of Kate Beckinsale, Benicio Del Toro, Shekhar Kapur and Giovanna Mezzogiorno.
With 19 films in the line-up, the competition includes an interesting mix of styles, generations, continents and reputations. It will pit big names from the past few decades (Mike Leigh, Abbas Kiarostami, Ken Loach, Takeshi Kitano, Bertrand Tavernier, Nikita Mikhalkov), against firmly established stars (Alejandro Gonzalez Inárritu, Rachid Bouchareb, Lee Chang-dong, Daniele Luchetti), confirmed newcomers (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Xavier Beauvois, Wang Xiaoshuai, Kornél Mundruczó) and a significant proportion of directors in competition for the first time: Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Matthieu Amalric, Im Sang-soo, Doug Liman, and Sergei Loznitsa.
There is also a very impressive out-of-competition line-up, including films by Ridley Scott (opening title), Woody Allen, Stephen Frears, Olivier Assayas and Oliver Stone, and a very diverse Un Certain Regard section. As always, there will also be some fine surprises in the Directors’ Fortnight and International Critics’ Week, as well as events like the Cinema Lesson by Marco Bellocchio and the Cinéfondation Workshop .
Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan will be screened in Un Certain Regard while Mrinal Sen’s Khandahar will be presented in Cannes Classics.
