Some Unknown Facts About the VEER 'Pindaris'!

Anil Sharma's epic musical drama, VEER, starring Salman Khan in the title role of a prince, releases this Friday. The film set in the British Raj, is a period costume drama and has been promoted as a film based on fiction, rather than facts, much in the same way that Anil's Sharma's GADAR-EK PREM KATHA was, and even the film that released alongside GADAR, Aamir Khan's Oscar nominee, LAGAAN.

VEER's love story may be pure fiction but the tribe 'Pindari' isn't. Salman is shown to belong to the tribe called 'Pindari' which came into existence almost 200 years ago, during the end of the Mughal dynastic rule. They were warriors and as shown in the film were skilled in sword fighting, horse riding and were full of courage and valour, quite similar to the Rajputs.

The 'Pindaris' actually came from different parts of India and settled together as one tribe and helped the Maratha warriors fight epic battles against the Mughals and later on the British. They always fought for the independence of their mother land and preferred to die rather than accept defeat.

So, fed up was the then British General, Lord Hastings with the 'Pindaris' that he declared war against the tribe and fought for almost two long years in order to control these heroic warriors. The British, due to their sophisticated weapons and more manpower prevailed over the 'Pindaris' and in the end a settlement was reached in lieu of which the 'Pindaris' were given land and pension and were made to settle in and around Gorakhpur, presently in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Here's hoping to see a grand cinematic depiction of the 'Pindaris' and their brave deeds on screen when VEER releases later this week.

Salman Khan Jockeying, Participates in Horse Race at Mahalakshmi Racecourse

Actor Salman Khan is going the distance to promote his forthcoming flick, Veer, a project that's very close to his heart. The actor was seen at the racecourse partaking in a horse race. Since morning, there was a buzz of Salman Khan coming to the racecourse and riding the filly 'Wild Rose'. Youngsters, adults and the aged alike braved the heat to get a glimpse of their favourite star.

Everyone present at the event - from chaiwalas to stall owners, from people placing bets to those who just came to engage themselves - everyone enquired about the presence of Salman Khan. "Salmaan aaya kya? (As he come yet?)" they asked each other, every five minutes. And then Salman appeared... Looking like a jockey to the T! The excitement was one to watch out for, the race course came alive with 'Veer' songs on the loudspeakers, and every television screen showcased the trailers of Salman-starrer 'Veer'.

Wearing a 'Veer' jersey, Salman, who probably was the sexiest jockey around, got atop his filly Wild Rose and emerged on the tracks alternatively waving to the cheering crowd and patting his horse! The actor did look a little apprehensive but wore a more relaxed demeanour once he managed to cross the finish line first.

Heaving a sigh of relief, he let us in on some secrets: My lagaam (rein) broke just before the race, and I was scared. I wasn't so sure if Wild Rose would be controllable, and wondered what if she went wild and took me riding for 15 rounds! Luckily, none of that happened. Also, I didn't win. I'm not fast at rising. My fellow jockeys helped me win. They purposely rode slowly so that I could be ahead of them."

Also present at the event were 'Veer' producer Vijay Gilani and 'Veer' actress Zarine Khan, whom many mistook for Katrina Kaif! Brother Arbaaz Khan and sisters Arpita and Alvira also cheered on Salman bhai, who was in his full element and basking in all the attention!

Miss Universe UK 2008 Lisa Lazarus Arrives in Mumbai to Shoot With Salman Khan For Veer

Lisa Lazarus, who arrived in Mumbai yesterday to shoot for Veer, refused to come till she was provided with four bouncers that cost the producers close to Rs 2 lakh

Miss Universe UK 2008 Lisa Lazarus, the second lead heroine of Salman Khan starrer Veer, flew down to Mumbai yesterday morning to shoot for the film but not before ensuring her safety. Without losing time producer Vijay Galani arranged for four bouncers so that Lisa felt comfortable Our source from the unit says, “A few days ago, Lisa informed Galani that she was keen to keep up her commitment of acting in Veer but she was apprehensive about her safety. Galani assured her that she should not worry and everything would proceed smoothly.”

Elaborating on the financial repercussions of employing four bouncers, our source says, “Galani is paying Rs 16,000 per day for the four bouncers. Lisa will be in India for 12 days. So, Galani has to shell out Rs 192,000 lakh extra for her visit.” Galani confirms and justifies his decision, “Lisa is the second heroine of my film. She plays a UK-based girl who comes with her father to India and falls in love with Salman. As a producer, I have to make her stay very comfortable.” Apart from Salman Khan and Lisa Lazarus, Veer stars the Katrina look-alike Zareen Khan whom Salman spotted on the sets of Subhash Ghai’s Yuvvraaj and recommended to Vijay Galani and director Anil Sharma.

Salman Khan Packs a Punch With Six Pack Abs for 'Veer'

Salman Khan has slogged to achieve a six pack abs for one of his most ambitious films, Veer produced by Vijay Galani and Eros International. This period musical love story is directed by Anil Sharma and has music by Sajid Wajid.

Our source close to the unit says, “Salman wanted a warrior look for the film that he has been waiting to make for 15 years. When the film was finalised, he worked hard on the script. He wanted a distinct look in the film which is set in the 19th century. After much deliberation, Salman decided to have long hair and a stunning physique with it. In fact when he went to London, he followed a strict diet and exercise regime and is now ready with the six pack.”
Alok Mathur, official spokesperson for Salman Khan, says, “Salman bhai had vowed that he would be back with this look and he has kept his word. He was on a strict diet and completely gave up rice. He was eating boiled chicken and proteins only. He gave up oily and fried stuff. The results are there for everyone to see.”

Vijay Galani the producer of the film says, “When I had signed Salman, we had not decided on the script or the director. I just signed him since I wanted to work with him and he gave me the idea of making this film. I knew that the film had a huge canvas that needed a lot of pre-production work. Then Anil Sharma came on board and we did research and decided on our shooting locations.

The film is set between 1860 and 1900 and we travelled all over the country to look for a story. We then decided to make a film on the Pindari tribe from Rajasthan which did not give in to the British rule. Salman plays a member of that tribe. After much discussion we decided on this look with long hair. Salman has worked very hard on his body and his look. We are all set to shoot the film now.”

The film will be completed by April or May next year and will be shot in various parts of India with a major schedule in London.

Salman Khan's Beefed Up, Bronzed Look in Veer

The story of the film 'Veer' (directed by Anil Sharma) has been written by Salman himself and while we did show you some pics of the actor in his new look for Veer earlier, this picture gives you a clearer idea of what to expect from this flick.

Salman, who is always known for experimenting with his looks, is seen in a beefed up, bronzed look with unusually long hair. The actor is seen wearing a fur jacket and an ethnic neckpiece and kada (bangle) Also from the looks of it, Salman seems to be playing a warrior of another era given the fact that he is seen holding a sword in one hand and a shield in the other.

In the recent past, Abhishek Bachchan tried the 'superhero meets warrior' look in Drona but unfortunately the film sank without a trace. Will Sallu bhai be able to pull of this warrior act in Veer, one will have to wait and watch.
