Freida Pinto's Ex Rohan Antao: 'Slumdog' Destroyed Our Love!
One gal's potential Oscar gold is apparently another guy's real-life heartache.
British newspaper the Mirror reports that the ex-fiance of Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto is crestfallen because his former flame dumped him after becoming "infatuated" with co-star Dev Patel.
Rohan Antao, who was betrothed to the Slumdog starlet, tells the paper that the couple's wedding-to-be was dashed by Pinto and Patel's increasing intimacy while promoting the sleeper hit, which is up for 10 Oscars tomorrow night.
"She ended it with me after getting close to Dev Patel," the 24-year-old Rohan says. "Now everywhere I go I see them on billboards. I am devastated."
Antao and Pinto began dating in September 2007 and quickly became altar-bound. By December 2007—within days of Pinto winning the Slumdog part that would make her an international star—the couple became engaged, celebrating their commitment with a ceremony attended by approximately 30 people in Goa.
But soon after the film began gaining acclaim, the relationship between Pinto and Rohan began to collapse.
First, he claims, the studio pressured Pinto into downplaying their relationship.
"The film bosses didn’t want her to be engaged," Rohan recalls. "It would affect the whole emphasis of the film, the love story. I had no say in it."
As Pinto spent more time with on-screen lover Patel promoting the film, Rohan says, her real-life relationship began to unravel.
"She was always with Dev, doing press publicity," Rohan laments. "They certainly did a brilliant job promoting a film about a couple in love! I knew there was chemistry between them, but she said she had no feelings towards him at that time."
Rohan says he went so far as to send Patel an angry text message stating, "You do know she is engaged, don’t you?" But he claims he received no response.
In January the situation came to a head and Pinto, while promoting Slumdog Millionaire in Los Angeles, ended things with a phone call. "She decided she didn’t want to be with me any more," Rohan says. "She said she wanted us to be friends. But how can I be when she has destroyed my faith in love?"
Though Pinto and Patel haven't yet acknowledged a real-life relationship, co-star Anil Kapoor claimed this week that the two are a couple. The two were reportedly spotted at H. Samuel jewlers in London on Valentine's Day.
None of which sits too well with Rohan.
"I wish [Pinto] success in her career, but I can’t watch the Oscars, and I don’t want to watch the film—it wrecked our love," he says.
