Incidentally, while Dhoni now lives in Jharkhand, his family hails from a village near Binsar in Uttarakhand. Both the skipper and his bride are pahadis. Like the rest of his brethren, Dhoni is a deeply religious and spiritual person. The locals say that his long hair, and the subsequent cut, was on account of a mannat he made to a local deity for a place in the Indian team first, and gesture of gratitude later.
Sakshi's father and Dhoni's father reportedly worked together in Ranchi. Her grandfather, a retired divisional forest officer, lives in Dehradun. The couple know each other from their days in DAV School, Ranchi.
Sakshi graduated from the Institute of Hotel Management in Aurangabad two months ago. She is currently working with Taj Bengal, Kolkata. Both Dhoni and Rawat are originally from Uttarakhand. Dhoni has been linked with a string of actresses in the past. But tongues started wagging about his involvement with the low-profile Sakshi, now 21, when they were first seen together in Aurangabad. Sakshi was also seen with Dhoni on November 19 when they went for a rickshaw ride on her 21st birthday. Such privacy is a luxury that she's unlikely to get, now that she’s married to Dhoni.
N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary and the owner of Chennai Super Kings, which Dhoni led to victory in this year's Indian Premier League (IPL) season, was present at the ceremony. Actress Bipasha Basu took to microblogging site Twitter to congratulate the couple. "Wishing Mahi and Sakshi a very happy life together forever. Sad that I can't be there," she tweeted. Bipasha also refuted rumours that Dhoni decided to get married on the spur of the moment, saying the wedding was planned months in advance. "The wedding on Sunday night was all planned. But no one was supposed to know about it. Whatever the truth, we must all be happy for the couple. It's party time!" she said.
Shilpa Shetty also congratulated the couple, posting: "Congratulations in order to Mahi and Sakshi, wishing them all the happiness and marital bliss forever." The media was kept far away from the ceremony. The hordes of mediapersons and television OB vans gathered there were not being allowed to proceed by private security guards, around more than one and a half kilometre from the venue. Dhoni has been reported to have visited Dehradun and Mussoori frequently over the last two years. The girl's father and Dhoni's father were working together in Ranchi. Her grandfather, a retired divisional forest officer, lives in Dehradun.

Says the saddened actress, "I couldn't go for the wedding because I'm shooting in Diu for Priyadarshan's Aakrosh. But John is there. He's back on Monday. I'll celebrate with Dhoni and his wife when they return to Mumbai."

M S Dhoni Gets Married to Sakshi Singh Rawat in Dehradun
MS Dhoni wed Sakshi Rawat at a private ceremony in Dehradun on Sunday, July 4th 2010, in what became one of the most talked-about marriages in India in recent times. The 29-year-old cricketer from Ranchi has been one of the hottest bachelor boys of India. His clean and straightforward image has fetched him dozens of endorsements making him among the highest-earning cricketers in the world.
Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (MSD) tied the nuptial knot with childhood friend Sakshi Singh Rawat on Sunday night in a private ceremony attended only by family members and close friends, including a few of his team-mates, at a farmhouse here.
The 28-year-old wicket-keeper batsman got engaged to Sakshi, a 23-year-old hotel management student, at a private ceremony on Saturday night.
The wedding at the picturesque Vishranti Resorts at Bidhauli, about 25km from here, was strictly a private affair with only 50-60 close relatives from both the families of the bride and the groom, along with few of Dhoni's India team-mates, attending.
Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, RP Singh, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma were among Dhoni's cricketer friends who were present at the wedding, according to a family member who attended the ceremony.
Owner of Chennai Super Kings, which was skippered by Dhoni in the IPL, and BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan was present at the ceremony.
BCCI president Shashank Manohar was also said to have attended the ceremony.
The wedding at the luxury resort had its share of glamour as Dhoni's friend John Abraham and director-choreographer Farah Khan gracing the occasion.
The marriage rituals commenced around 8pm when Dhoni on a horseback and the groom's party walked for around half a kilometer to the bride's place, located at the same resort premises.
Dhoni wore a black 'sherwani' while Sakshi was dressed up in 'churidar-pyjama'.
Tight security was thrown around the resort. The media was practically kept out of bounds and they had to station themselves at a 1 km distance from the main gate of the sprawling resort and the news relating to the wedding ceremony inside came out in trickles.
Even the select guests who attended the wedding ceremony were seen being brought into the resort in four vehicles kept for the purpose.
A top police official said that Dhoni arrived early this morning at the farmhouse, where adequate police force has been deployed.
"We have been requested by the family members that the wedding should be totally a private affair," said the police official.
Although family sources had indicated after the engagement that the marriage will take place in October, India's tight schedule in the next few months might have prompted the preponement.
The couple is expected to host a reception in Mumbai on July 7, which also happens to be Dhoni's 29th birthday.
Dhoni and Sakshi, who hails from Aurangabad, had been school friends at DAV, Shamily in Ranchi.
"Their fathers worked together in MECON, and the Rawats moved to Dehradun after retirement," a family friend said.
The Indian captain is currently enjoying a rare break from international cricket and will be next seen in action during a three-Test series against Sri Lanka scheduled to begin from July 18 at Galle.
Dhoni, who made his international debut against Bangladesh in December 2004, has so far played 43 Tests, 166 ODIs and 25 T20s.
Under his captaincy, India won the 2007 ICC World Cup Twenty20, CB Series of 200708, and the Border-Gavaskar trophy 2008 beating Australia 20.
He also captained Chennai Super Kings to victory in this year's Indian Premier League. He is now captain of India in all three forms of the game, leading the team to its first ever bilateral ODI series wins in Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
Under his leadership, India attained the number one status in Test cricket and became number two this year in ODI rankings.
Dhoni has also been the recipient of ICC ODI Player of the Year award in 2008 and 2009 (the first Indian to achieve this feat). He was bestowed the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award and the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour in 2009.

Dhoni With Wife Sakshi at the Chepauk Stadium, Chennai, Dhoni's First Public Appearance With Sakshi After Marriage
It looks like Indian cricket captain M S Dhoni couldn't take his eyes off his bride Sakshi Rawat at the Chepauk Stadium Complex in Chennai on Friday, where he accepted the honorary membership conferred on him by the 164-year old Madras Cricket Club (MCC) for his contribution to the game in the country.

Someone should have told Sakshi about the power of the close-up. We know the hush-hush shaadi must've left no time for preening for her first public appearance as Mrs Dhoni, but the chipped fire red nail paint is way too tacky to ignore (especially when you decide to wear a rock that size on your fingers). A manicure is in order, Mrs Dhoni. And by the way, welcome to celebrity scrutiny.
