Notes for Track 9 (“Adónde Voy”) from the “Jardin Azul/Las Canciones Favoritas” 2004 Anthology

“Tish Hinojosa, a good, thoughtful songwriter from Texas, wrote this. She grew up in the Southwest along the border, and being Mexican-American, is especially sensitive to the desperate struggles of the Mexican migrant workers. It takes an enormous amount of courage to leave your village - where you know everybody will to starve to death if you don’t put your life on the line - to try to make it across the border, and then try to get a job up in the United States. When you get there, if you can get a job, you’re likely to be underpaid, harassed by police, rounded up, and jailed indefinitely.
